（英文常見問題）in progress  vs in process -進行中？

　

「進行中」究竟是 in progress 還是 in process 呢？

參考劍橋字典的解釋：

🔥Process可以用作名詞和動詞。

❶process(n）

= a series of actions that you take in order to achieve a result　(步驟，過程)

e.g. The party has begun the painful (= difficult) process of rethinking its policies and strategy.

❷process(v）

＝to deal with documents in an official way

e.g. Visa applications take 28 days to process.

🔥progress同樣可以用作名詞和動詞。

❶progress（n） = movement to an improved or more developed state, or to a forward position

　(進展，進程)

e.g The talks failed to make any progress toward a settlement.

❷progress（v）＝to move toward an improved or more developed state, or to a forward position

e.g. Construction is progressing well.

　

❸in progress　(正在進行中) = happening or being done

e.g.：Repair work is in progress and will continue until June.

　

而 in process 呢？是大家約定俗成的慣常誤用。

就好似中文「感同身受」和「身同感受」一樣，純粹是相似及順口。

嚴格來說，這個並不是慣用的說法；

想要表達 __(某事)__ in progress 的意思，

只能說類似 in the process of __(某事)__。

e.g. Look！ The sign reads, “Renovation in progress". The museum is now in the process of renovation and we'll have to visit again soon.

　

再說，商界、會計界有個常見的術語 WIP (半成品)，

全名有人寫成 work in process，也有人寫成 work in progress－－

兩個都沒拼錯，

前者偏向美式英語，後者則是是英美都有人使用、整體較常見的拼法，

它們意思相通，不過還是建議用 work in progress 比較正統。

　



另外，字首 "pro-" 帶有正向、正面的意味，

progress 是指 proceeding (向前行進中) 的、有進展的－－

「進行中」既然有進字，

就可以用 in progress 來表達「進」程。

　

那 process 不是也有字首 "pro-"嗎？

表面上是，但是它的讀音卻更像 PROCess 而不是 PROcess，

而它的 connotation (涵意) 也確實只屬中性，不像 progress 那樣偏向正面褒義。

　

總之，「進行中」較正規的英文說法是 in progress

當然，你也可以用進行式，表示動作進行中。

例如:"I'm running." 表示自己跑步中。
